Glycan Analysis?

Hi! Welcome back! In this post, I will talk about my experience with research assessments till now and talk a little about my third research assessment.

In the past week, I have completed my third research assessment, another annotated bibliography. I explored an additional five academic journal papers in-depth and concentrated on known and unknown aspects of data analysis. I focused more on data visualization in this research assessment and deriving trends from data.

As I have started to build traction in both my research experience and the broad general flow of things, I was excited to do more in-depth research on the vast field of data analysis. It was truly encouraging for me as I realized that when coming across more complex and specified articles, I could understand them, something I could not have done just a week ago. I can now understand a new variety of concepts that I could not wrap my head around previously.

It was exciting to be able to understand academic research of such technicality, however, the most challenging one for me to understand was the “A MATLAB-based app to improve LC-MS/MS data analysis for N-linked glycan peak identification.” (Dhingra) It focused on the the formulation of an app that can help users track their glycan levels (often done when one has diabetes or cancer) and also as a utile tool for glycan analysis. It took some time for me to understand the complex terminology used in the paper (as I have not done Chemistry in nearly two years). It was amazing to see what these pharmacists and students could do by analyzing data, and I realized that I had chosen the right field of study. It was also riveting to see the content overlap from my AP Statistics course (we had just learned about linear regression) to see a paper using linear regression and quantile regression analysis.

Therefore, I feel like I have grown and am ready to dive deeper into even more specific fields or applications of data analysis. To do this, I shall strive to put even more effort into my independent learning and soon start conducting research interviews to learn from professionals in the field.

That would allow me to help build my knowledge and possibly even change my perspective towards my topic (in a good way). I want to be able to apply my newfound erudition to a future project and start doing research specifically in the skills needed to analyze data!

There is a growing sense of momentum, and I look forward to what lies ahead!

Thank you for reading! I hope to see you back next time.
