Growing: Small Setbacks and Progressing

Hi! Welcome back! In this post, I will discuss how I came to my original work idea and successful attempts to set up interviews with professionals in the field.

The past week of ISM has been nerve-wracking trying to come up with a unique original work idea and being able to ask professionals if they would be willing to converse about data and marketing.

It was mind-boggling to conclude what my original work proposal should be. I spent hours researching and brainstorming with the help of my teacher and peers, and I was able to refine my ideas with them. I wanted to analyze marketing data and create a data-driven marketing plan, but I needed to learn two things. Where would I get this data, and how would I present this marketing plan as a product?

After conversing with my teacher in class on Thursday, he suggested I could find data from case studies and even showed me how to find textbooks with case studies through the SMU Cox Business School online library. Although I found the case studies I will be using in my original work via my access to the Collin College database, I sincerely appreciate my teacher taking the time to sit down and discuss with me. I then concluded that for my original work, I would write a research paper suggesting a data-driven marketing strategy for an imaginary company (or even a real one) to implement.

Although stressful, another challenge that stared me straight in the eye was asking professionals for interviews. With my small-scale success, contacting 20+ professionals and hearing back from 5, reassured me that people are willing to help me learn, and so I messaged these five professionals. I successfully set up an interview with a professional who was kind enough to meet me via Zoom, and I am currently working to set up another interview.

I did not know how these professionals would respond to my message, but I am glad their responses were all positive.

My journey with ISM has enabled me to step out of my comfort zone and grow as an individual. Something I always say when people ask me, why are you graduating school early? It is because I find school monotonous (mostly), but doing this independent research has allowed me to realize my areas of interest. I am sure I will be able to learn and enjoy my near-future start at university.

Thank you for reading! I hope to see you back next time.
